Take action

The Laboratory Of Life
Take Action

There is a popular misconception that we might be able to just wish our dreams into being. Maybe on some other level of consciousness this is the case, but here on earth what we need to do is take action in our lives. Vision is an important companion to our efforts, but it can’t accomplish anything all by itself. When we focus on what we want and ask for what we want, we are initiating a conversation with the universe. Our desires, passionately defined and expressed, bring about valuable and relevant opportunities, which we then respond to by either taking or leaving them.

Many of us are afraid to step out into the world and make things happen, and so we hang back, dreaming and waiting and watching. There are times in life when this is the right thing to do, but this phase of inaction must eventually give way to its opposite if we are to build our dreams into a reality. This can be really scary, and we may fail and struggle, but that’s okay becaus...

Burdens

At The Feet Of The Divine
Laying Our Burdens Down

We all know the feeling of walking through life as if we are carrying the huge burden of our worries and stresses on our backs and shoulders, struggling to keep moving forward. There is no real way to move freely and fluidly in such a situation, and we are all longing to lay our burdens down. Just imagining that it would be possible to do such a thing can be enough to elicit a sigh of relief and a feeling of lightness.

The human imagination is a powerful tool, and we can use it to take journeys to faraway places without ever leaving our home. Because of this, we too can lay our burdens down at the feet of a divine being such as the great Mother, Buddha or a mountain. Releasing ourselves from that which we can’t handle on our own. No matter how smart we are, how capable we are, or how hard we work, no one can single-handedly cope with all the worries that we tend to take on in the course of our lives. And, we aren't designed to do so. ...

Guilty

Guilty Pleasures
Feeling Guilty about Being Happy

Happiness is an experience we all long for and deserve in our lives. We may wish for the happiness that comes with a much-needed vacation or an exciting new love affair, yet when the actual experience of happiness emerges, we may be too overcome with guilt to enjoy it. If guilt is interfering with your ability to feel joy, you may find relief in looking at the beliefs you hold about yourself and what it means for you to be happy.

Guilt about feeling happy can arise for different reasons. Deep down you may believe that you don’t deserve to be happy because you hurt someone in the past, had more than others growing up, or maybe you received a mean comment from someone you admired. Perhaps it once seemed that painful experiences always followed happy ones; now whenever you begin to feel happy, you find yourself waiting for the other shoe to drop. Happiness may even just feel uncomfortable because you’ve gotten so used to feeling down. The tr...

To those fortunate ones who long for emancipation it may be the great vessel by which they may procure Freedom. But to the unfortunates who only sin, it may be the guide to lower and miserable states of existence. This our life is the boundary mark whence one may take an upward or downward path. Our present time is a most precious time, wherein each of us must decide, in one way or other, for lasting good or lasting ill.
One who aims only at his own individual peace and happiness adopts the lower path (Hinayana), but he who devotes the merits of his love and compassion to the cause of others belongs to the higher path (Mahayana).
In meditating on the Final Goal, one has to discover the non-existence of the personal Ego, and therefore the fallacy that it exists (i.e. because everything in the univers...

learning

Permission To Forgive Ourselves
Releasing Guilt

Learning to accept the things that we perceive as wrong can be a
difficult task for many of us. Often we have been brought up to accept that
it is normal to feel guilty about our actions and that by doing so we
will make everything seem alright within ourselves. Even though we might
feel that we have a reason to make up for the choices we have made, it
is much more important for us to learn how to deal with them in a
healthy and positive way, such as through forgiveness and understanding.

When we can look back at our past and really assess what has happened,
we begin to realize that there are many dimensions to our actions.
While feeling guilty might assuage our feelings at first, it is really only
a short-term solution. It is all too ironic that being hard on
ourselves is the easy way out. If we truly are able to gaze upon our lives
through the lens of compassion, however, we will be able to see that there
is much more to what we do and ha...

Remember

Gift Of This Journey
Why We Don’t Remember

Many of us wonder why we do not remember who we were before we were
born. We wonder what it was like to be a soul without a body and what it
will be like to be one again. Many of us have a strange sense that we do
remember, as if we did experience a bodiless existence, but we can’t
quite recall the details. We may remember feeling as if we were flying,
or as if we were just incredibly light and unrestricted in our
movements. Still, most of us do not recall anything in detail about the time
before we incarnated into a human body.

There are many possible reasons for this deep forgetting, one of which
is that remembering would probably impinge upon our ability to fully
commit to this life. Experiencing life on earth without any memory of an
alternative existence allows us to be here completely, and that is what
is required in order for us to learn much of what we must learn here.
Most of us are not meant to spend our time here preoccupied with
conc...

The legends surrounding the life of the Buddha have been the principal sources of inspiration for the creators of Buddhist art. A knowledge of these are needed for a meaningful insight into the nuances of Buddhist art, since each stage of the Buddha's many existences plays a part in the development of this art.
The young prince Gautama Siddhartha was born into the ancient Sakya clan, whose symbol was the lion; hence he is often known as "Sakyamuni" (the Sage of the Sakya), or as "Sakyasimha" (the Lion of the Sakya). His father belonged to the warrior caste. Soon after the young prince's birth, a wise sage named Asita predicted that the child would grow up to be a holy man, rather than following his father as ruler. Suddhodana, father of Gautama, tried to prevent this from happening by making sure that the prince lived a sequestered life of ease and luxury in the royal palace, ignorant of the world outside.
Even to this day Buddha is represented with extended earlobes, now empty o...
